Conference Summary and Highlights

Thank you for helping make the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science’s 2006 National State of the Science Congress in Nursing Research Improving Life: Development and Dissemination of Nursing Innovation, a huge success.

This year the Congress once again provided a national forum for communicating emerging innovations in nursing science and the opportunity for nurse scientists to dialogue about current research in nursing health care. Developing nurse scientists had the opportunity to network, build their research skills, and to hear from some of the best in the discipline, while faculty and administrators were able to examine successful strategies for building research capacity. This year’s Congress provided participants the opportunity to network with editors and associate editors from preeminent scholarly nursing journals, directors from the NINR, and some of the most experienced nurse scientists in the discipline.

The Keynote Session presented by Nancy Fugate Woods, PhD, RN, FAAN, gave the participants the opportunity to hear about emerging data related to gene-environment interactions as they influence health for women. Participants also had the opportunity to hear from Medial Consultant Patricia Clark on how to better convey their story to the public. Through a point/counter-point and panel discussion the needs for multi-site research in nursing were also addressed. The Congress finally wrapped up with Antonia Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN, giving the Gloria Smith/Kellog Lectureship on Health Disparities, where she described models of effective community-university partnerships that have focused on research and the barriers and facilitators to such partnerships.

In addition to the informative general sessions, this year’s Congress provided the opportunity for over 300 paper and poster presenters to share their latest research with Congress participants. In an effort to highlight the work of the research from special partner groups the Council introduced the Council Network Nexus Award Celebration and Council Partnership Reception.

It was at the Council Network Nexus Award Celebration where the inaugural presentation of the biennial AAN/CANS Awards took place. Margaret M. Heitkemper, PhD, RN, FAAN, was presented the Outstanding Nursing Scientist Award. The Investigator with a Brilliant Future Award went to Usha Menon, PhD, RN.

With a total of 785 registrants, the 2006 National State of the Science Congress in Nursing Research was an overwhelming success. Once again thank you to all of the presenters, participants, and planners that were involved in the Congress.
