Duck-Hee Kang Memorial Mentored Workshop For Early Career Nurse Scientists

Call for Applications

Duck-Hee Kang, PhD, RN, FAAN (1947-2016) was a biobehavioral nurse scientist, teacher, mentor and friend who contributed greatly to science, the nursing profession, her colleagues and her students. This workshop is presented in her memory.

Overview: This workshop provides an opportunity for research mentoring between senior research nurse scientists (faculty) and competitively selected doctorally prepared (PhD, DNSc, research doctorate) early career nurse scientists (postdoctoral and new faculty) (participants). The one-day workshop sponsored by the Early Career Special Interest Group of the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS) will be held on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 prior to the CANS 2018 State of the Science Congress.

Description: This one-day program will offer participants the opportunity to receive critique on a submitted research grant proposal and participate as a member of a NIH-style mock review panel. The day will be split into two parts. In the morning, the participants’ research proposals will be critiqued and discussed during a mock review session. The senior faculty will serve as primary reviewers for two grants and secondary reviewers for two grants. Early-career participants will be expected to serve as secondary reviewers for all applications except their own. In the afternoon, participants will work in small groups with faculty to utilize the critiques and comments from the mock review session to improve their proposals for submission to a participant-selected research funding source.

Early-career participants: Six participants will be selected by the Science Committee of the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science. Selected participants will be notified by March 25, 2018.

Senior faculty participants: Three faculty will be selected by the Science Committee of the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science.
