Nurse Staffing: Relationships with Patient Care Quality and Safety

This presentation will review results of recent research addressing the relationship between nurse staffing and the quality and safety of patient care. The strength and consistency of evidence will be evaluated and specific needs for future study will be identified. Infrastructure requirements for producing a solid evidence base to support practice, policy development, and administrative initiatives will be emphasized.

This talk will center on the emerging crisis of chronic illness and how this will continue to impact the health care system. We will specifically discuss how nurses and others can help patients learn to self-manage their conditions. Case studies will be drawn from the experiences of both the small group and On-line Programs of the Stanford Patient Education Research Center.
